| International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane undertook a successful official visit to the Republic of Bulgaria on 2 to 4 September 2011 – the first by a South African Foreign Minister. The visit took place within the context of strengthening and renewing political, bilateral and diplomatic relations between South Africa and Bulgaria as the two countries move towards celebrating 20 years of diplomatic relations. On 14 September 2011 the Director of the Institute of Astronomy of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the National Astronomical Observatory, Dr Tanyu Botev invited Ambassador Sheila Camerer to an event celebrating the 30th anniversary of its founding followed by a visit to the Observatory (near Smolyan).Ambassador Camerer was invited to say a few words at the ceremony and used the opportunity to speak about the SALT at Sutherland and the Meerkat project plus South Africa’s bid to host the SKA radio telescope.
